DISCHARGE
Always read your MEDICAL RECORD carefully when it is given to you, and if you have any questions, ask the staff. You will need to countersign the record upon discharge.
Below you will find the possible outcomes of your care pathway.
DISCHARGE TO HOME
If you are discharged to home, you may return home.
The instructions to follow are in the
"NOTES AND PRESCRIPTIONS" section of your documentation.
Here you will find:
- medications to take
- any follow-up tests to perform
- the physician's instructions
There may be prescriptions for medications or visits. If present, go to the pharmacy for medications and to the clinic for the prescribed visit.
Always keep the documentation provided.
IMPORTANT: if you have a family doctor in Italy, give them a copy of the documentation.
DISCHARGE TO OUTPATIENT FACILITY
The day and time of the Outpatient Visit are in the
"NOTES AND PRESCRIPTIONS" section.
You must present yourself bringing:
- all your medical documentation
- the emergency department record
- the prescription for the visit provided at the emergency department
For some services, co-payment may be required at the cashier indicated by the staff.
TRANSFER TO ANOTHER AREA
OF THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
In some cases, your care pathway continues within the emergency department.
SOU – Short-stay Observation Unit
You will remain in a dedicated area where you can undergo further tests and/or treatments, and then be discharged or, if necessary, admitted.
ADMISSION TO HOSPITAL WARD
If you are admitted:
- you will be transferred to a hospital ward
- from this point, your care pathway continues outside the emergency department
- visiting hours will be provided to you upon admission to the ward
Sick leave certificate
If you need a sick leave certificate, inform the physician before discharge or admission.
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT CO-PAYMENT
Co-payment is required for non-urgent visits not followed by admission. If not exempt, the patient pays the fixed amount and any co-payments for tests/services performed.

CO-PAYMENT FOR MEDICATIONS AND VISITS
If you do not have a tax code, TEAM card, or STP card, medications and/or specialist visits will be prescribed on letterhead and you will have to pay the full rate, even if you would be entitled to an exemption.
